How to place an embroidery order. part 2

In the last article we discussed our logos and apparel choices. These are the two most important items when it comes to embroidery. The next step will be taking your logo and your apparel to your embroiderer. Depending on who you are using these two steps may be intertwined within the process.

The next big step is to get a sample sew out if this is a first time logo. Most all embroiderers will provide a sample to cover themselves as well as the customer. This sample can be done on a scrap piece of material or on an actual piece of apparel. If this will be done on the actual apparel please remember to provide one extra for this purpose (if you are buying your apparel though the embroiderer then please let them know that you will need a sew out sample. They will more then likely cover the cost of this). There will more then likely be many sew outs while the digitizer is attempting to make your logo work. The final one will be the one needed to be approved.

Once your sew out is approved the job can begin production. Production can take days to weeks depending on the size of the order and the complexity of the logo. Please allow adequate time to allow for a quality product.

How to place an embroidery order. part 1

How do I place an order for embroidered goods? Seems like a simple question, but with words like digitizing, conversion software, custom logos, typeset logos & stock designs it can be a bit confusing. Hopefully after reading this article you will fully understand how this process works.

The first thing anyone should do is secure their logo and or design. This could mean many things. Do you have a company logo? If so is it in vector format? Is it on a business card or a website? As discussed in a previous article vector is by far the best format. But, if you only have a bitmap image this will work as well, provided a couple of things are adhered to. If your logo is on a business card or a website try to provide as large of an image as possible. This image will have to be remade to work with the digitizing software. Also try to provide the best quality image as possible. If you already have your art work digitized then that will save you a step, but has this artwork been tested with a sample and sew out? Many digitizers do things differently so it is our suggestion that you get your digitizing done at the same place you get your embroidery done. This will ensure a great finished product without any complications. The third option here is to use a "stock design". This does not mean any old image you find on the Internet or clip art found in many pieces of software available for web design or print work. Stock designs like the ones from http://www.dakotacollectibles.com/ are made with embroidery in mind. These designs are pretested and sewn out to ensure their compatibility with digitizing software and embroidery machines.

With any of the three options above it is essential that we understand the differences in print work and embroidery work. Artwork that is to complicated or with small lettering will simply not turn out well in an embroidery design. This should be thought of when working with a logo anyways. I firmly believe in the K.I.S.S. method, keep it simple stupid. What you are trying to accomplish is logo recognition. You really don't need to have all the information about your company within a logo. When you see the McDonald's arches do you need to be told within the logo that its McDonald's logo? Of course not. This is advertising in one of it's simplest forms, logo recognition. So keep your logo as simple as possible, as it will be small on a shirt or hat and will be hard to read at a glance. Also text that is smaller then 1/4 inch in height will not look good at all in your finished product. Bottom line is artwork that may look good on a computer screen may not look as good in the sewn format. So think about this as you are designing your logo.

The second step is to determine what type of apparel this embroidery work will be applied to. This in my opinion is just as important as determining your logo. By selecting your apparel and logo you will be starting your corporate identity, so it is of the utmost importance to begin this on the right foot. First question to ask is what type of business am I running? This will determine what type of apparel your employees will be wearing to show off your new logo.

Colors are also of great importance. I cannot say how many times I have seen a great logo that turned out horrible because of the color or style of apparel it was embroidered on. Thats right its time to get the old color wheel out. Remember this from grade school? We have contrasting colors, complimenting colors and one of the newest trends tone on tone. Of course there are many other design possibilities in fact to many to mention in this article. Tone on tone seems to be very popular for a subtle corporate look. This style is done with a solid color shirt or other apparel with the logo being the same color with a slightly different tint. This may seem like it would not show up very well. In all reality the slightest difference in the colors can make the logo stand out. This will provide a very professional look.

Embroidery Stabilizers

Embroidery stabilizers are one of the most important aspects of embroidery. It can be the difference in a good run and total failure. Stabilizers can be split for this articles sake into two main categories: Backings & Toppings

A backing is a sample of fabric that is placed underneath the original fabric to provide a stable fabric to stitch through. Many fabrics have a tendency to stretch or pull during the stitching process. A good quality backing can prevent this from happening and help you to advert a design nightmare.

Topping is placed over the fabric to be embroidered. Most toppings easily dissolve with water to allow a clean finished product. Toppings prevent stitching from sinking into fabric and prevent the concave look.

There are some simple guidelines that when followed can help you have the most profitable time with your embroidering business. The heavier or denser a fabric is, the heavier the weight of backing that should be used. The same can be said with the lighter of fabrics you use the lighter the backing should be. Typically backings can be defined in two categories:
Tear Away & Cut Away

Materials that tend to stretch more should be stitched with a cut away backing to prevent stretching the stitches when tearing away the backing. With more stable materials tear away should be used as it is easier to work with and the stitches and fabric will not be affected by the tear away process.

Corporate Identity = Embroidery

Embroidery is often unknown to the general public. Many people simply don't think about it at all. Yet everyday they see examples everywhere they go. Embroidery is becoming one of the most popular forms of corporate identity around today. Any company that wants to get the company logo, trademark or motto in front of their customers looks towards embroidering.

Embroidery has always been a status symbol for the elite our societies. Earlier in its history embroidery was all made by hand sewing. This was and is a very tedious task and art form. Due to these facts it has always been reserved for the well to do in our society. Within the past two hundred years we have seen a revolution in the embroidery industry. The invention of the embroidery machines have brought mass production to the embroidery scene. Now almost anyone can own and operate an embroidery machine. Thus making the prices for embroidery go way down and the demand go way up.

In the corporate business world perception is king. If people perceive your business to be something, then your business will become just that. This is where your company identity comes into play. If you are just starting out with a new company these questions might arise:

* Where will I generate business?
* How will I get my company name out to the public?
* How will I convince my customers to take a chance on a smaller company such as us?

Once again this is where your business identity comes into play. All of these problems can be solved with an aggressive advertising plan and a solid corporate identity. But who really wants all the coffee cups, pens and all that jazz? You are a professional business, not a high school football team. Nothing is better then a nice dress shirt or polo with a tone on tone logo. Or just a subtle logo, no need to go over the top here. Leave the flash and flare to the amateurs. You are a professional, embroidery is the only way to go.

Embroidery is as old as time itself

Man of all time periods, have had a great desire to liven up his environment. Early on examples of man's clothing, that starting from 3000 B.C. at the three-dimensional creation of the spiral thread known today as embroidery.

The current western culture has taken this a bit further with the use of modern day embroidery machines. Now it is not simply about decorations on or clothing. Embroidery has taken on a whole new tone of corporate wear. Corporate entities define their companies with logo and slogans. Embroidery captures these marketing tools and advertises them. With the invention of modern day embroidery corporate companies have written their identities in the history books of our time.

It's not just corporations that are jumping on the bandwagon. Many other organizations that need to advertise their identities, are finding embroidery to be a valuable avenue. Sports teams, non profit organizations, clubs and many other forms of groups are finding this to be true.

What is Digitization?

Digitizing is the process that converts your image file into a workable embroidery file. The common misconception in the industry by the end customer is that their artwork is already digitized (unless it has been digitized for embroidery). In the age of the PC the word digitizing has come to mean many things. It is the hopes of this article to clear up what digitizing means to the embroidery field.

Modern day embroidery is done by stitching machines that must have a proper embroidery format to complete the task. Many types of formats are accepted by embroidery digitization artist. There are therefore to many to mention within this article but for the sake of explaining we can narrow this down into two groups: Bitmap & Vector art types.

Bitmap Artwork is very common through out the Internet. The definition of bitmap is: "The method of storing information that maps an image pixel, bit by bit". This can be a bit confusing. Bitmap image are simply 10-1000's of pixels (dots) used to create an image (digital cameras typically use a bitmap format). With the use of pixels there are limitations. Size & resolutions being one of the major drawbacks. When working with websites, graphics are often made for one size and one size only. Bitmaps work great for this and are typically smaller in byte size then any other form of artwork which can be used on websites. However it is not common place to use bitmaps in print work as they cannot be resized with any efficiency. Jpeg is a common format for bitmap artwork.

Vector Artwork is a much more recent technology. The definition of vector artwork is: "Artwork that uses a mathematical language to describe color, shape, and placement information of the individual components of an image". This is confusing as well, but fairly simple to understand. Vector uses math to create its images. Therefore it can resized to any sizes (smaller or larger) without losing its quality. This makes vector the perfect medium for print work as one original piece of artwork can be used for business cards as well as billboards. EPS is a common format for vector artwork.

Vector artwork is much more preferred in the embroidery image as it can typically be imported into the digitizers software. This is not to say bitmap cannot be accepted or that the digitizers job is done once receiving vector artwork. All artwork whether bitmap or vector must be manually converted into a stitch file. A stitch file actually contains the stitch patterns and thread colors for the sew out. You see an image must be manually worked up to threads. This process is called digitizing. This is why you will often see a one time price for artwork digitization. It is suggested you have your digitization done by the same company you will be getting your embroidery done at.
